Mary Schapiro’s job was to fix the SEC Essay 1.Kotter’s eight steps As already noted, the SEC was starkly exposed as ill-equipped to deal with the chaos erupting across the globe. It was under strong criticism for the serious fraud of Bernard Madoff and the collapse of Wall Street stalwart Lehman Brothers. Accordingly, Mary Schapiro, a career regulator, was appointed the 29th chairman of SEC to save a languishing SEC. She changed the way they were doing things at the SEC including creating new structures, procedures, and programs to better address the modern financial markets as an urgent need to restore the credibility and public confidence in the SEC. This analysis is based on Kotter’s (1995) eight-step process for leading successful change. a.Establishing a sense of urgency The chairwoman argues that urgency is critical. Schapiro developed a change program with three priorities comprising internal assessment, investor protection focus and mistakes acknowledgement. The mission was to turn the SEC to be a high functioning, agile and intelligent, and committed to investor protection and market integrity. b.Creating a guiding coalition In order to able to manage the change process, she brought in new leadership and new senior team. The new leadership team set about retraining, skilling up and motivating the SEC’s talent staff. In addition, the investor –focused agenda was putting in place. The board and senior management and then all levels of decision making were required to pay attention to risk at all level of an enterprise. The whistle blower program was set up to detect securities violations. A final goal was to admit the mistakes that the SEC made under its watch. This is the first step in communicating the change vision. c.Developing a vision and strategy A vision was created to help direct the change effort, that was, to build a high functioning, agile and intelligent, and committed to investor protection and market integrity agency. d.Communicating the change vision In order to communicate the change vision, the chairwoman developed an open  way communication in which all staff and bankers could directly discuss with her. e.Empowering broad-based actions The SEC critically trained their staff to become certified fraud examiners. The organisation was restructured by removing the whole layer of management sending those to the frontline putting thousand staff to different focus groups such as corrupt foreign practices, insider trading, market manipulation and structured products. In addition, the SEC also set rules for over the counter and asset backed securities, hedge funds and examination program. f.Generate short- term wins Monetary reward and safe avenue were offered to whistle blower as a way to encourage people to detect securities violation as part of the change program. Fine was charged to financial institution (Goldman Sachs) due to misleading investor mortgage securities. g.Consolidating gains and producing more change h.Anchor new approaches in the future The change within the SEC was continually anchored for several years after the change commenced.

Growing Up In the Hood   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Is it a coincidence that highly urbanized areas are full of crime and always statistically higher than small towns and rural areas? A child that is being brought up in a metropolitan area that is full of violent crimes is flooded in a sense and has nothing to do but to breath in some of the negative influences that go on around him. Therefore, I believe that the most influential scene in a child’s life is the neighborhood that he grows up in. Parents cannot constantly watch over their children, ask about whom they are hanging out with, constantly check where they are, and find out what they are getting themselves into? (Statistics p348)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When a child is growing up he is frequently asked what he is going to do for money when he gets older. The more this question is asked to them, the more they feel like they have to have money to be happy in life. After many tries of trying to make a stable life at a low paying job, a criminal life maybe more appealing to them at they may start living life under the gun. As stated by William Wilson in When Work Disappears, â€Å"Neighborhoods plagued by high levels of joblessness are more likely to experience low levels of social organization, they go hand in hand.† In Chicago for instance, in 1990 there was only one in three in the twelve ghetto communities that had held a job in a typical workweek of the year. When there are high rates of joblessness bigger problems surface such as violent crime, gang violence, and drug trafficking. (Wilson P356-362)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  These crime-ridden communities (or ghettos) are springing up all through the country, mainly in and around major metropolitan areas. These areas are the most populated, so that means that within these areas are the most people there to be influenced by the crimes committed by fellow people. In Male's reading he shows statistics that prove the fact that once the poverty factor is taken away then teen violence disappears. He later adds, â€Å"That if America wants to rid of juvenile violence than serious consideration needs to be given to the societally inflicted violence of raising three to 10 times more youth in poverty than other Western nations.† (Males p386)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As stated by Elijah Anderson, â€Å"Just living in a low-income area gives most residents less hope for there own future.

Missile Defense Agency

The Missile Defense Agency is an organization known for it’s selectiveness in choosing candidates to work for them. Knowing this, I am submitting my resume in hopes of becoming a part of the MDA team at the Department of Defense. National security is an issue that every American must be concerned about in this era, and in my case I have prepared through my education and experience to become an employee of such an agency as this. The mission of the Missile Defense Agency is to develop, test, and prepare for deployment a missile defense system, and my experience in management and logistics has prepared me to work in a field such as this. I feel that my strength as an employee, my ability to problem solve and my abilities with strategic planning would make me a strong candidate to become a part of the Missile Defense Agency. The Missile Defense Agency plays an important role in the United States today. More than ever our country needs to be prepared for the unthinkable. Every day on the news there are many mentions of events happening around the world that renew my belief that a prepared Missile Defense Agency is essential to the national security of our country. To this end, I am dedicated to the mission of the MDA and the Department of Defense, not only because I am a citizen of this country and have a personal stock in the security of our nation, but because my own personal experience and education would lend a lot to the agency and my contributions would definitely be substantial. Furthermore, my daughter has recently enlisted in the United States Army, and I feel my personal connection with the importance of the security of this nation would make me an excellent candidate for the MDA Logistics position. My education has been the most formative experience of my life. My Bachelors of Science in Human Resource Management was obtained from Athens State University in Alabama. During my time at university I was able to learn a great deal about business, management, and how important it is to learn from every experience. Much of my education was not within the classroom, but outside of it, because I am a person that enjoys learning hands-on and obtaining new skill sets that will help me develop into a better person and employee. When I began to seek an institution to obtain my Masters degree I chose Florida Institute of Technology in Alabama because of the degree they offered in Management and Logistics Management. This degree has helped me to develop a strong aptitude for data analysis and a high attention to detail. Graduate college courses have exposed me to transportation security, transportation economics, strategic intermodel transportation, and much more to prepare me for a career in the logistics arena. Modes of instruction included correspondence courses, formal classes, developmental assignments, and independent studies. The courses I`ve taken in my major at Florida Institute of Technology have given me a broader understanding of logistics and distribution. The skill sets I’ve obtained as a student have prepared me to become a strong member of the Missile Defense Agency. The above training and experience will enable me to perform well at the Missile Defense Agency. Effective oral communication is critical to the mission of your organization, and I have this skill developed through years of education and career experience. Talent for ensuring proper staff direction at all times to maximize contribution of each individual including planning, directing, work assignments, and expediting problem resolution is one of my most valuable skills. The ability to analyze logistics support needs accurately and to establish and maintain satisfactory relationship with other employees is an important part of my prior work experiences, and I am adept at developing and maintaining detailed administrative and procedural processes that reduce redundancy, improve efficiency, and achieve organizational objectives. I performed the duties of logistics functions and principles by implementing a quarterly inventory control system, and my acute ability to transform organizational strategies into action and achievement with superior ability to lead performance-driven teams. I have also been able to demonstrate diverse skills by interacting with personnel from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. All in all, my skills and abilities have prepared me to become a successful and committed employee of the Missile Defense Agency and I look forward to joining your team. Â
